Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.
In over 20 years of experience, I’ve been leading highly complex technological projects and Cyber Security programs, consolidating a significant experience of more than ten years in Security & Cyber Security management.
Throughout my professional career In Terna S.p.A, I’ve developed, managed and coordinated the Computer Emergency Readiness Team - CERT and the Security Operations Center - SOC H24 7/7. I’ve also overseen the following central presidium areas at Group level: Cyber Risk Management & Policies, Cyber Security Architectures & Engineering, Cyber Security Assessment & Ethical Hacking, Cyber Security Awareness & Cooperation, Cyber Resilience Strategy & OT Security.
Additionally, I operate as a member of Advisory Boards, Scientific Committees and Expert Groups relevant in the national and international Cyber Security landscape – also collaborating in Cyber Security relevant publications.
What is one of your guiding leadership principles?
I firmly believe that the principles which should guide a good leader concern, on the one hand, adequate performance that is properly focused on achieving a positive outcome; but on the other hand, I strongly believe it is important to emphasise integrity, reliability and empathic understanding amongst all those working towards the same goal. Without this, any goal, even the simplest one, will be challenging to achieve.
What is the greatest challenge CISOs face today, and how are you addressing it?
Among the various challenges my role entails, as Terna plays a pivotal role in Italy’s energy and digital transition, is the exponential impact on Cyber Security implications, as it increases the number of devices and systems in the field and their level of interconnectedness and sophistication. This impact is widely shaped by the growing impact of artificial intelligence and quantum computing, as well as by an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape, which is becoming increasingly complex and affected by tensions and technological dependency.
Moreover, in line with its prominent role, it is important to mention that Terna is responsible not only for the resilience of its own digital infrastructure, but also for that of the entire electricity supply chain. This ecosystem includes various players: large energy groups, which mostly operate with high Cyber Security standards, and small and medium-sized producers and distributors, whose engagement with Cyber Security has only intensified in recent years.
What is the key to success for someone just starting out as a CISO?
My recommendation is to always listen to the people around you, as everyone’s contribution is precious in shaping the future, and never stop learning and challenging yourself every day.
Another key element is the creation and maintenance of relationships and networks with other external stakeholders, in order to foster ongoing dialogue, knowledge-sharing and understanding of environments different from the one in which we operate.
How do you measure success as a leader?
In line with the principles outlined above, I believe that success – as far as it can be measured – may be attributed to achieving adequate performance and positive outcomes. However, without constant growth, satisfaction and, above all, the well-being of the people who have contributed to achieving this result, such success would be meaningless. Working efficiently, in a healthy and structured environment, is essential to achieving the expected success.
