The CSCO Mandate — Turning Cost Pressure into Enterprise Performance

Only 21% of CSCOs feel confident they can meet short term cost expectations according to Gartner Insights. Cost management has reached a critical inflection point as CEOs and CFOs demand margin protection while volatility, inflation, labor constraints and shifting customer expectations intensify.

The most effective CSCOs are redefining cost performance by improving P&L credibility, sharpening cost visibility and modernizing network decisions to lift enterprise value. With AI and automation, they are expanding capacity and streamlining core processes for greater speed and quality.

The mandate is clear: supply chains must deliver measurable cost impact today while supporting the long term evolution of the network, the workforce and the technology foundation. CSCOs who balance immediate pressure with a forward looking view of resilience and capacity will set the next benchmark for performance.

Discussion Questions

  • How can CSCOs shift from cost takers to enterprise cost leaders by linking operating decisions to measurable business value?
  • How are CSCOs improving cost visibility, including cost‑to‑serve, to strengthen P&L credibility and enable confident network and investment decisions?
  • Where can CSCOs drive real, near‑term cost productivity across inventory, procurement and logistics, and where do AI or automation meaningfully help?
  • What decision rights or guardrails most effectively prevent cross‑functional actions that undermine cost and enterprise value?
  • How can CSCOs meet urgent cost targets without compromising long‑term network, workforce and technology investments, and align those tradeoffs with CEO, CFO and board expectations?
  • As supply chains take a more assertive role in cost management, what new sources of enterprise value are emerging beyond efficiency?
