Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.

I started working in Governance, Risk, and Compliance consulting back in 2007. My journey took me from Anti-Bribery Compliance, subsequently to Internal Control Systems, Quality Management, Health and Safety Management functions, and finally to IT.

In that area, I spent an amazing 8 years in different management functions until I took over my current role as CISO for MAN Truck & Bus. Having worked in South Africa for 3 years during this time, I gained a lot of great experiences that influenced my way of management and leadership.

What is one of your guiding leadership principles?

Act as a coach and be a role model for your colleagues. Always treat everyone with respect while focusing on moving things forward.

What is the greatest challenge CISOs face today, and how are you addressing it?

The greatest challenge is to keep up with the ever-changing environment in information security. Planning is key, while being flexible to react and adapt.

What is the key to success for someone just starting out as a CISO?

Get an overview of the as-is situation, and compare that with where you want to move your organization to. Make a plan, get stakeholders’ support, and give your team what it needs to move forward. Stay curious.

How do you measure success as a leader?

Creating an environment in which a team can actively push things forward and is empowered to act consistently with the team's mission.
