Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.
My high school careers advisor suggested that I not try anything involving computers. But after a brief stint as a trainee bank teller, I was invited to sit for a programmers aptitude test, and the rest is history. I've since moved through many roles in the IT career path, and I have spent the last 10 years of my career travelling across the world and experiencing many cultures that have significantly influenced the way I feel about people, organisations and the way technology impacts us all.
What is one of your guiding leadership principles?
Honesty and respect. Amazing things can happen when open, honest and respectful conversations are had.
With disruption being a key theme of recent years, where do you see the CIO role going in the next 1-2 years?
My current role is about modernisation and transformation over the next 1-2 years. There's a lot of work to do here, and currently, the main disruptors are cultural discontent and train strikes!
What advice would you give to someone just starting out as a CIO?
You don't come into a C-level role without support from your peers and a lot of experience. The best advice I would give someone just starting out is to trust your instincts. They are what got you here. And, then trust your team. You can't possibly do this without them.
Tell us 3 fun facts about yourself.
- I've been to 48 countries, but have never been to Greece… definitely on my bucket list!
- I was the first 'member of the public' to bungee jump in China when AJ Hackett opened their first Chinese jump in Beijing in 2000.
- My very happy place is a Sunday afternoon, cooking a roast for my family, listening to the Blues and opening a great bottle of red (and even better if the F1 is on!).
