Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.

I’ve been fortunate in getting exposure and depth in many industries that use data to make great decisions. Healthcare drew me in, because they have a lot of data and also a lot of opportunities to leverage insights better. My work at Medtronic and Accenture led me to a deeper understanding of the potential to use data for good in Healthcare. With my diverse industry experience, I bring a fresh perspective and passion to solve Healthcare’s challenging problems. This is what led me to Sutter Health, where I joined as a CDAO in mid-September 2023.

What is one of your guiding leadership principles?

“You have two ears and one mouth” said the Greek Philosopher Epictetus. Listening drives leaders to position their views and vision better. And of course, better data can only help!

With disruption being a key theme of recent years, where do you see the CDAO role going in the next 1-2 years?

I see CDAOs as being some of the most knowledgeable business leaders in a company. I see myself building significant trust and business intelligence with my C-level peers to lead initiatives that improve our patient experience and bring higher growth and efficiency to our business.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out as a CDAO?

Build a great highway and teach people how to drive their own cars; don’t build a better horse-carriage. Be clear about the impact you will make in the organization. Build great relationships and learn the business. Help your teams succeed and grow future leaders that embrace diversity. Be flexible and walk in your stakeholders’ shoes.

Tell us 3 fun facts about yourself.

  1. I love traveling and hiking the outdoors, and my recent family trip was to Scotland. We also love to watch fireworks in unique places, and we’ve done New Years’ Eve in Singapore and Sydney recently.
  2. I fell in love with data when I helped build the first digital network map of the Mississippi as a grad school research assistant.
  3. I’m a science fiction fan. My favorite books/shows are Foundation by Asimov and all things Star Wars.

What is the value of joining an Evanta community?

I was part of the Evanta community in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. I loved being part of the Governing Body and bringing a community together. Not only did I make some amazing friends and colleagues, but I helped shape the thinking around the key issues that CDAOs face today. I am excited to see what this community can do, and am eager to share my perspectives and seek help as needed!
