Sonali Bhagwat is a Senior Director of Data Governance at Twitter, and she leads data management, information architecture, data quality, compliance and data delivery programs. Before joining Twitter, she was at Microsoft for a decade, leading the data governance and Master Data Management programs for Finance.

Sonali holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and a Bachelors in Engineering from the University of Mumbai.

Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.

My path into data governance was definitely not a straight line. I went from software engineering to business intelligence to finance analytics to data management and then finally governance. 
 

What are some of your guiding leadership principles?

Lead with empathy and emotion before the reaction.
 

With disruption being a key theme of the past year, where do you see your role as a CDAO going in the next 1-2 years?

Compliance and Digital Transformation
 

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the role as a CDAO?

We are on a daily journey to learn and grow. Never stop listening and listening to understand. Always think ahead a few years; create clarity for your team and leadership; generate energy and deliver.

  1. I love urban gardening.
  2. I prefer mountains over beaches.
  3. Exploring Asian street food in every country is on my bucket list.
