Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.

I started my career in the business, building direct mail response models and then building demand plans for The Disney Catalog. I was frustrated with the quality of the data I was working with and the response time to get the datasets I needed for modeling, and I knew there had to be a better and easier way. My next job was Database Manager that introduced me to Data Warehousing (1999), and I've remained in the data space ever since.

What is one of your guiding leadership principles?

Share your plan, hire sharp and experienced leaders that believe in your plan and unleash them to do their magic.

With disruption being a key theme of the past few years, where do you see your role as a CDAO going in the next 1-2 years?

I believe that the role will expand from CDAO to CDAO. Today, we are focused on building our core applications and platforms and ensuring we have the appropriate governance and controls in place.   But as our organization's data literacy grows, there will be a big need for advanced analytics and data science capabilities like AI and ML.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the role as a CDAO?

There are so many flavors of the CDAO role. Really dig in and understand the data needs of your organization. Meet with other CDAOs and understand the variations, then determine what will be right for you and your organization both in the short and long term.

Tell us three fun facts about yourself.

  1. I’m Canadian and still retain my citizenship and passport even though I've been working in the US since 1996.
  2. I am married and have 3 amazing kids that span middle school and high school.
  3. I love working out, specifically Barre, running and Beach Body (I'm a huge Shaun T fan).
