In his book Combat Jump, Ed Ruggero tells the story of the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily. In this first attempt by the U.S. Army to use parachute forces, nearly everything went wrong. Though dropped far from their targets, some lost and leaderless, the paratroopers still accomplished their missions. Their energetic, innovative and fearless commander prepared them for success by developing his subordinates, communicating the mission and inspiring his people.
