The healthcare industry is built of strong building blocks, but many institutions have lost sight of how to integrate them into the process of care delivery. According to Dr. David Burton, wasted resources today probably cost more than the projected costs for financing the reform the industry needs. What can chairs and chiefs do to reach peak performance through emphasis on managing processes of care? First, stop looking at areas of resource waste, like patient injury, as incidents to be reported by caregivers. Start approaching these incidents as failures in a process of care rather than people failures, and realize that what is needed is improved analytic feedback about the measures of the processes and their outcomes. Using examples from the methodology he and Dr. Brent James developed at Intermountain Healthcare, Dr. Burton will share a framework for thinking about healthcare reform based on the anatomy of healthcare delivery and how you can use this schema to transform your organization to help it succeed in the new shared-risk environment ahead.

The Methodist Hospital Research Institute (TMHRI) targets the world’s most challenging medical issues with a dynamic multidisciplinary approach to research and innovation. Dr. Mauro Ferrari, President and CEO of TMHRI, has spent his life following the evolution of scientific research and mastering the leadership skills required to execute critical research initiatives in the face of continual disruption or innovation in policy, science and technology. The first step in designing a sustainable IT system is to talk candidly about connectivity challenges, the lack of collaboration between institutions that share data, and other common roadblocks to optimizing IT systems. A narrow and rigid approach to analytics is no longer sufficient — organizations must adopt the analytic perspective of provider and payer to accelerate smarter decision making and enable better risk management. In this session, Leslie will explore the impending transformation of reimbursement structures and the resulting change in analytics and data infrastructure needed to support accountable care models.

Dr. Bernard Harris envisions a strong leadership collective within the Texas healthcare community.
